At Mahébourg Market, the colours of fresh vegetables, the voices of stallholders and the constant flow of regulars reveal a Mauritius far removed from the postcard image. Here, behind every stall, there is a story. Pratimah’s is one of hard work, family and passing knowledge from one generation to the next.

Married at 19, Pratimah became part of a family whose everyday life was already shaped by the land and the market. Her father-in-law worked at the market, her husband was a farmer, and her mother-in-law also helped sell their produce. After the birth of her two children, Pratimah decided to join them.

She hesitated at first, but soon embraced the work with a simple conviction: no honest job should ever be looked down upon when it enables you to move forward and support your family. Years of hard work followed, and today she speaks with particular pride of her two children, who both went on to university.

From behind her stall, piled with tomatoes, green beans, pumpkins and leafy vegetables, Pratimah has also watched Mahébourg Market change over the years. Shopping habits have evolved, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic, yet for her the market remains an essential part of local life.

What concerns her most, however, is the future. Pratimah would like to see more young Mauritians take an interest in farming, learn how to cultivate the land and listen to those who still carry its knowledge and traditions.

Because what will become of these skills if there is no one to pass them on?

Meeting Pratimah reminds us that the authentic spirit of Mauritius is found not only in its landscapes, but also in these quiet life stories, essential trades and traditions handed down through generations.

In Mahébourg, Pratimah does more than sell the produce of the land. In her own way, she is helping to preserve its legacy.
