At Tamarin Bay, enjoying a bowl of boulettes comes with more than just a sea view. There’s a special atmosphere here, one that Françoise Ricot has been part of for nearly twenty years. Her small food business has become much more than a place to grab a bite: it’s a familiar meeting spot where locals and visitors come together.

Rooted in Mauritius’ Sino-Mauritian culinary heritage, boulettes (steamed dumplings) are among the island’s most beloved specialities. Served hot in a flavourful broth, they are one of those simple pleasures that can be enjoyed at almost any time of day.

A Family Venture That Became a Tradition

For Françoise, it all began with a desire to work for herself and build something of her own. Encouraged by her husband, she first learned the trade alongside her father-in-law before gradually setting up her own business.

Almost two decades later, Françoise and her husband are still a familiar presence at Tamarin Bay, where their food stall has become part of everyday life. Here, people know one another, stop for a chat and gather over a steaming bowl of boulettes or noodles (the famous “mines”).

The Taste of Tamarin

Beyond the food itself, it is the atmosphere of the bay that makes the experience so special. This is a place where generations meet, where people come to enjoy the beach, catch up with friends and share a tasty, affordable meal in a relaxed setting.

Through Françoise’s journey, we discover another side of Mauritius: one shaped by small family-run businesses, culinary traditions passed down through generations and the spontaneous encounters that give local life its unmistakable charm.

Watch the video and meet Françoise, whose boulettes have become a familiar part of life at Tamarin Bay.
