In the mid-1990s, Mauritius’ hotel industry entered a new phase of development. Beachcomber, one of the island’s hospitality pioneers, embarked on an extensive programme of renovation and modernisation across its properties, while taking care to preserve the individual identity and character of each hotel.
From the Victoria in Pointe-aux-Piments, completely redesigned ahead of its reopening, to the Mauricia, where guest rooms and shared spaces were upgraded, transformation was under way across the group. The Royal Palm expanded its offering with private apartments and a spectacular Royal Suite, while the Shandrani, Paradis and Trou aux Biches also enhanced their facilities. New restaurants, renovated rooms, improved sports amenities, redesigned gardens and upgraded golf facilities all reflected the same ambition: to meet the rising expectations of an international clientele without losing the elegance and distinctive spirit of Mauritian hospitality.
Through its detailed descriptions, archive photographs and accounts from members of the teams working at the time, this article takes us back to a pivotal period in the history of tourism in Mauritius. It reveals how Beachcomber contributed to the evolution of the destination, placing innovation, service excellence and continual renewal at the heart of its development.
