In September 1994, Côte Nord Magazine featured Sunset Boulevard, an ambitious development that promised to transform Grand Baie’s waterfront.

Inspired by Port-Grimaud on the French Riviera, Mauritian architect Jean-Marc Eynaud envisioned a village within Grand Baie, complete with pedestrian lanes, shops, restaurants and jetties where visitors could arrive by boat, even to go to the cinema!

The idea was to create a welcoming, human-scale setting that combined Mauritian-inspired architecture with waterfront promenades and leisure facilities, while reflecting the region’s growing appeal as a tourist destination.

More than thirty years later, this article takes us back to a time when Grand Baie was undergoing significant change, offering a fascinating glimpse into the ideas and ambitions that helped shape the town we know today.
