Rodrigues celebrated its 24 years of autonomy on the 12th of October, marking an important chapter in the island’s history. More than a commemorative date, it was an occasion for Rodriguans to come together and celebrate their shared heritage, their culture and the deep sense of belonging that connects them to their island.
Since 2002, Rodrigues has had its own Regional Assembly. Twenty-four years on, the anniversary remains a meaningful occasion for the island’s people. Celebrations took place across Rodrigues, including at Jean-Daniel André Stadium in Camp-du-Roi, where music, dance and community gatherings brought people together in a spirit of unity.

Beyond its historical significance, the day was also an opportunity to celebrate everything that makes Rodrigues so distinctive. Its unspoilt landscapes, enduring traditions, music, craftsmanship and cuisine are all part of a rich cultural heritage, kept alive by the people who call the island home. Skills and knowledge continue to be passed down through generations, traditions remain woven into everyday life, and hospitality is as much a way of life as it is a cherished value.
To mark the occasion, the Rodrigues Tourism Office also unveiled a colourful artwork by Luc Michael Martin. Featuring the name “RODRIGUES” in large, illustrated letters, the installation incorporates symbols inspired by the island’s landscapes, natural beauty and cultural identity. While the anniversary offers a moment to reflect on the journey since 2002, it is equally about looking ahead. Young Rodriguans, artisans, entrepreneurs, artists and the many people who contribute to island life are helping shape its future in their own ways. As new generations bring fresh ideas and ambitions, Rodrigues continues to evolve while holding on to the traditions and values that make it unique. Ultimately, this anniversary celebrates far more than a milestone. It honours a shared history, a living culture and the quiet but deeply rooted pride of being Rodriguan.
