Sharfaa is a young Mauritian artist who specialises in Mehndi, skilfully practising the traditional art of henna body painting associated with weddings and celebrations.

“In Muslim culture, it is almost impossible to imagine a wedding without Mehndi.” For Sharfaa, these words capture the importance of a tradition deeply rooted in weddings and major celebrations.

At just 21, this young Mauritian artist has already mastered the intricate art of Mehndi, also known as Mehendi. Using natural henna, she creates delicate floral, geometric and symbolic patterns directly onto the skin, each one drawn entirely freehand.

Far more than a temporary form of body art, Mehndi requires patience, precision and a strong sense of tradition. Every design is unique and marks a special occasion, whether a wedding, religious festival, family celebration or personal milestone.

Once closely associated with traditional ceremonies, henna art is now attracting a wider audience in Mauritius. Through Sharfaa’s skilled hands, Travel-Îles explores a living craft, a form of artistic expression and a cultural tradition being reinterpreted by a new generation.
