In Bel Ombre, Franceska Hortense-Calotte creates natural, biodegradable plates from locally collected palm leaves.

In Bel Ombre, in the south of Mauritius, Franceska Hortense-Calotte transforms fallen palm leaves into natural, biodegradable and environmentally friendly plates.

Through her initiative, Outgrowing Fey Palmis, she gives new life to a locally available plant material while offering a sustainable alternative to disposable plastic and polystyrene tableware.

Collected across the Bel Ombre estate, the leaves are carefully selected and shaped into sturdy, practical plates made entirely from natural materials. The process brings together waste reduction, the responsible use of local resources and Mauritian creativity.

Travel-Îles meets Franceska and explores an inspiring environmental initiative that shows how a simple material provided by nature can be transformed into an object that is useful, attractive and meaningful.
